Arrival At Daytona

The TomTom GPS led us faithfully to Daytona beach despite the driving rain and wind. In fact it would have been very difficult to navigate some of the interchanges under those conditions without GPS assistance.

Daytona Beach

Our pre-booked resort hotel was 5 miles from the track on the Daytona beach strip, which is miles of hotels/resorts along the beach front on one side with miles of businesses across the multi-lane street.

The driving rain hadn’t lessened much, and the wind seemed to be increasing. In the southerly direction, the sky was black, real black.

Tornado Warning

Becoming concerned with the weather for the next day, with luggage still in our arms, upon arrival in the room we flipped on the TV weather channel. The speaker just finished spouting, “…for the Daytona beach area!” What was that, say that again. The TV complied, with scrolling messages across the top and bottom. “There is a severe Tornado warning for the Daytona beach area for the next two hours. Please take appropriate action and cover immediately. Do not disregard these warnings!”100_0457

Huh? We are on the 4th floor, what do we do? Looking out the patio door everything continues as normal as it can during driving rain and wind. We step back out the entry door, which is a long continuous balcony stretching half the length of the entire hotel. A college student is yelling, “A $%c*& tornado. I would just love to see a tornado. I never seen a tornado, bring it on.” And smiles as he walks past.

Way up the other end of the balcony hallway, another mutters: “That sky looks pretty black, I don’t want to see any tornado.”

Finally we get to talk to one of the hotel maintenance guys. “Don’t be too concerned,” he says, “they do that all the time down here. I think they do it in case anything happens we can’t say we didn’t know about it.”

Tomorrow Is A Better Day

“Everything will be fine, the storm is supposed to blow over and it will be a nice day for the race tomorrow.”100_0459

I think that made us feel better. Later when we went out for some lunch at Denny’s, a calm was beginning, the sky had spotted clouds and the rain had stopped. Tomorrow is race day!
