Rowing Across The Atlantic
I see in today's paper that some individuals have departed on a venture to beat the records for rowing across the Atlantic. (In a pink boat I might add.) This is all well and good, and I can understand the drive to do something individual and different.
I cannot understand why it is allowed. Here we are, with supposedly not enough money for our health care system, our highway repair programs, our education system and so on. Yet we allow events such as this to take place. If something goes wrong, search and rescue operations are not cheap. All the coordination and activity required to do a mid-Atlantic rescue can cost millions. These types of ventures go on several times a year and we look at it like it is such a wonderful thing.
We all pay for these little trips. Even the free navigation equipment and satellite phones that companies donate to promote their products are not free. A few pennies added here and there when you purchase yours is okay..right?
