Interruption Slows Us Down
Don’t you hate interruptions when you are trying to get something done? These days many people interrupt themselves.
Our obsession with cell phones causes many to interrupt themselves many times a day, over and over again.
Walking through a mall a few days ago, seven out of ten people would be walking along, then suddenly stop and check their cell phone. Some would stop and “thumb out” a text message. One stopped and made an actual voice call. Two were walking and talking on their cell at the same time. (Multi-tasking?)
In a store a little later there was one ‘gentleman’ talking loudly on his cell phone while a patient store employee was trying to show him some of their products.
Later at a grocery store a lady was trying to unload her cart with one hand while talking on the cell with the other. I was quite interested to find out her kids were driving her nuts.
Attending a function later in the day it was interesting to see many had their cell phone laid out close by, just in case. If a message came in, that was the priority immediately no matter what else they were doing.
It was even a little humorous to see one person pick up their phone and head to the bathroom. I am not sure what the priority was in that case, the phone or the pressure of the moment.
And to think a few years back these things didn’t even exist. How did we cope?
Whether its texting or talking on the cell it interrupts what you are doing and the task at hand takes longer and can even be dangerous.
I didn’t even mention the guy walking down the mall playing solitaire. Must have been a dull slow day.
