What Makes Drivers Neglect Signal Lights
I have done a fair amount of driving in my life, and a large amount of training large vehicle drivers.
The majority of us have been trained to use signal lights when driving to signal our intentions. Yet the majority of drivers neglect to ever use their signal lights. This is not restrictive to young drivers, old drivers, or middle age drivers, it applies to a cross section of all drivers.
Unfortunately this includes experienced professional drivers as well as the inexperienced, although professionals are a lot better overall.
On top of that, I have talked to various drivers at different times, and they would agree that other drivers rarely if ever use signal lights. “What is wrong with those people?” they would say. Yet, some time later I would be driving behind these very people and they are not using signal lights at all.
Many of those that do use their signals do so after they are already doing the turn or lane change.
Why is this? Why don’t drivers signal their turns and other intentions while driving?
Is it:
- Lack of enforcement, similar to those not stopping at stop signs?
- The “I don’t care” attitude that prevails in society today?
- Do they not realize the dangers of abrupt moves in traffic?
- Do they feel that everyone else has to watch out for them?
- Is it me first, the heck with everyone else?
Well I bet every one of you reading this blog say, “Well I use my signal lights, I can tell you that.” But you know what – the majority of you don’t!
