Facebook On Skype

Yesterday Version 5 of Skype was released. I've been a long time user and proponent of Skype. I use it for nearly all my phone calls, video calls, chat messages, texts, file transfers, desktop sharing - well you get the picture, I like Skype a lot.

Skype Version 5 adds more features. You can now monitor your main Facebook page directly inside Skype. As well you can update your status comments and comment on your friend's posts.  To get the full features of Facebook, such as specific pages, games, photo albums and so on,  you still have to log in to your Facebook account.

But to keep up to the minute track of your main Facebook posts and comments, it works well. Skype appears to update the Facebook portion approximately every 11 minutes, unless you elect to click the Refresh link more often.

You can also call your Facebook friends using Skype by clicking Phonebook and then the call button. This you may or may not like; if you have your phone number on your Facebook profile, it appears on the list in the Facebook portion of Skype.  If your phone number is not listed on your Facebook profile, there is a link "Ask for contact numbers."

The other Skype Version 5 feature is group video calling, allowing you to call multiple people with video at once. Although Skype is known for its high quality video, I have not been able to test this yet as everyone has to have Skype Version 5 for it to work, and not many of my friends know about it yet.

If you haven’t tried Skype yet, it might be worth trying. Computer to computer calls are free. Paying a small fee yearly allows unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in Canada & the US. If you already have Skype, and are on Facebook, it is time to get Version 5.
