It’s Done With Mirrors

I have done a fair amount of highway driving so far this summer. Having been a heavy vehicle trainer I understand what causes collisions. Almost all are driver error.

Now that summer is finally here, the recreation vehicle population has increased to its higher summer numbers.  In fact I would venture a guess that the numbers are even a little greater than average.

TrailerNoMirrors One of the biggest irritants with or without the recreation vehicles is the fact that the majority of drivers never use signal indicators. That has become pretty common.

A new unbelievable bad situation is the number of recreational trailers being towed on our roads without adequate mirrors. Large vacation trailers being towed by cars, vans and pickup trucks with no mirrors. Oh sure they have their regular mirrors on the sides of their vehicles, but the trailer is wider than the towing vehicle so the driver can’t see anything behind.

How do they check if it is safe to turn? How do they know where the sides of the trailer are when turning? How do they see if they have to back up?  How do they even know what is going on around them? What if an emergency vehicle is approaching from the rear?

It is illegal not to have adequate rear view mirrors. More importantly it is extremely dangerous, for themselves and other road users.

Like many other things, there is little or no enforcement for these and other safety issues. Helps fill up the six o’clock news though doesn’t it?
