Signs of the Times
Wrong
On a 100 mi (160km) trip today I came across two instances where wrong highway construction signs were being displayed.
In light of the fact there have been serious so-called accidents in the recent past, this doesn’t help safety for motorists or workers.
The first was multiple signs showing the left lane was closed ahead. This was on the right portion of a four lane highway.
However upon reaching the construction area, it was the right lane everyone was traveling in that contained workers, construction vehicles, cones, barriers and so on.
There were also two construction vehicles on the left shoulder as well.
Traffic had to move to the left, just the opposite to what the warning signs had indicated.
I noticed in my mirror just as I passed, one of the construction vehicles on the left shoulder made a sudden U-turn and move to the right shoulder, with no signals or warning lights.
Flag Person?
Later on in the day we approached another construction site on a secondary two lane road. Signs indicated construction ahead, with a flagman(person) directing traffic. Be prepared to stop.
Upon arriving at the construction scene, my line of traffic met with an oncoming line of traffic traveling at speed. There were dump trucks and workers on both shoulders of the road.
Things looked a bit disorganized, as if the dump trucks didn’t quite know what they were going to do next. Traffic moved through at a moderate pace, but I really couldn’t say there was much safety involved.
The dump truck ahead of me suddenly stopped after traveling for considerable distance, put on its right signal after trying to move over on a non-existent shoulder.
I had to wait for oncoming traffic, signal and get out of there.
I mention this today because this is not the first time I have encountered wrong signage this year. Signs are supposed to warn us, and we are subject to traffic tickets if we do not follow them properly.
Responsible For Your Own Safety
Just remember, for your own safety, and the safety of workers, you can’t always rely 100% on signs that were put in place by humans!
