Share The Road
This is a message to bicyclists from a motorist.
We are supposed to share the road right? Most of the time we do.
There is one little problem. I have run across this more than several times in recent weeks.
In our province a cyclist is entitled to at least half the lane they are in. That is a bare minimum, I prefer to give more when I can.
The Problem
I notice it is popular for cyclists to travel in groups.
The problem arises when these groups travel together tightly one behind the other, making a line of bicycles quite a few metres (or feet) long.
Just days ago, in the rain, on a two lane secondary road, traffic had to get by a single bicycle, a bicycle built for two, a single, another built for two, followed by another single, all traveling about a foot apart.
That makes it pretty dangerous for traffic passing, and also for the bike riders.
The Solution
It might be safer if you would space yourselves a little farther apart, maybe even in two's, so that passing vehicles would only have to pass one or two bikes, then have a place to pull in. Then pass the next one or two and so on.
I am a firm believer in sharing the road. With the increased collisions and fatalities we are experiencing this year, I think we could share a little safer.
