Miss A Beat
You notice this blog skips a beat or two (day or two) every now and then. Most people only participate in certain aspects of the net. A blog, email or just plain surf around to see what is interesting.
I don't think many realize what it takes to have all this at our finger tips. I am currently running a web site, this blog, and a bulletin board or forum. I am finding time management is all important, and it has made me appreciate what is behind all those web sites, newsletters and other items on the internet.
For example the website. It takes huge amounts of time to set up pages, with graphics, links and other items that may be interesting to many or a few. Once a page has been placed online, it has to be updated from time to time, and in some cases often. Some pages need to be updated often to keep people coming back. Others act as a reference and must stay the same. Frequently a web page accumulates so much information that is has to be broken up into several pages, resulting in more links and adjustments to take care of.
A web page can generate a lot of email. Often users want more information. Sometimes they want to know where you got the information. Other times they are just commenting. In all cases it is a courtesy to acknowledge their interest in your site. Don't think spammers only hit your personal email. They like to 'enlighten' site operators too. Those have to be dealt with in various fashions.
A bulletin board can be almost as demanding. It has to be checked often, and you need to reply to inquiries as quickly as possible. Boards do have the advantage of being able to have appointed moderators that can do most of the operational aspects.
And there is the blog, where nearly anyone can have their say on any topic they wish within reason. But again it pays to be consistent or who will bother to read it.
All of the stuff on the internet is available at the click of a mouse. There is a lot going on behind the scene to make that possible. After having dabbled in some of these areas I can appreciate that. Click - Poof - Gone!
