Together Forever
It has been on the TV news and in the local paper. I have heard of it happening many times over the past years. What am I talking about? When an elderly couple gets well into their "golden years" and require the services of a 'home' due to medical or mobility reasons.
How many times does it happen that one person is placed in one facility, while the other is in another kilometres away? After spending their lives together for years, just when they need to be together the most for each other's support and enjoyment, someone (younger I might add) decides they are going to be moved - apart.
In this case the powers to be, offered to place them together in a place that has space hundreds of kilometres away. That would place them so far away from immediate family members that visits would be few and far between, taking more away from the elderly couple. What is even more ironic, I live in that place hundreds of kilometres away, and over the past year I have heard of several incidences of eldery couples here being separated for the exact same reason. Funny there is space for those such a long distance away, but not the locals.
In other words it is the same old song and dance routine by those who don't care. As one who lost his wife not long ago, I think older couples should always be allowed to be together no matter what the cost. Time is precious. There has to be a practical way to do that. We find money to donate to other causes in other countries, and advertise a surplus in different areas, maybe it it time to look in our own back yard.
One consolation, those that are making these wonderful decisions for those that can't are getting old too. Maybe, just maybe "what goes around, comes around" will some day apply.
