Wow!

I think I found the answer to yesterdays weather forecast. I am locally inland. We got the 2 cm, followed by 10 more, which is going to turn to rain if it doesn't.

When windows Vista first came out, I liked it, or thought I did. The more I use it, the more I dislike it. That seems to be the story throughout most internet users.

I turned off all its fancy animations and dinky displays to get some decent speed out of it. I turned off most of UAC (User Account Control), because being a keyboard person I didn't want to click seven or eight times every time I wanted to install something or move a file.

I am amazed at how fast modern technology is progressing and changing our lives for the better - except for computer operating systems.

This morning I spent over thirty minutes allowing my Vista system to be updated. I have it set to notify me when updates are available. Otherwise it will decide to update in the middle of something important. You can have the computer sit idle for days and no updates will occur. Start something important, and in the middle of your project it will either lock up or crash the program you are using to tell you to restart or some other foolish thing.

I know nothing about programming, but I can't figure out why they can't design an operating system that doesn't require updates every week, or sometimes every second day. I can't figure out why I can buy a new computer, but I don't own the operating system. I (it) has to verify that it is authentic every time an update arrives. If my copy was legitimate yesterday, or last week, it probably is today. Maybe there is something to be said for pirates, they don't have to go through all the hassles us honest people do.

A bigger irritant is "you must restart your computer to finish the updates". Why wasn't all this security stuff programmed into it before the operating system was released? After all you advertised it was the most secure system ever. It has had more updates than any prior system I know.

I understand "the wow starts now" !

And please don't tell me to buy a Mac, or to use Linux. once windows leads you down the software trail, there isn't room enough to turn around.
