Concert By The Sea - Margaretsville

ConcertByTheSea_11Jul09_02 Throughout the summer, small towns in Nova Scotia supply entertainment at its best for reasonable prices. Such was the case on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Margaretsville, Nova Scotia. Margaretsville is near where I grew up close to Port George, N.S., so had special meaning to me since I had spent time there in my younger years.

I decided to attend Concert By The Sea in Margaretsville mainly due to the fact I had attended a Mother’s Day concert in Wolfville in May by Country Generations, and they were to be featured this weekend there.

Although the crowd was small (there were numerous other scheduled events all over the province), the show was not. With a stage set overlooking the Bay of Fundy, and grounds that were almost theatre like, and with the weather cooperating perfectly it was a fantastic day.

The show opened with a variety of songs by Frank Spinney such as “Where I Come From,” “Always On My Mind,” and “Poor Man’s Paradise” to name only a few. Frank Dobin added his talent on the piano/keyboard along with vocals as well.

Then there was Tony Barkhouse, with songs “Walk Softly On This Heart of Mine,” “Swinging Doors,” and others. “Orange Blossom Special” was a favourite by Lucas Monroe on fiddle.

The band Witchitaw which is mostly another generation of the Spinney family made up the next 40 minutes of the show, playing blues, southern rock and new country. Dave Steel (not sure of the correct spelling) continued with “Save The Last Dance..” and on to Frank Spinney and Elizabeth (of the Gems) to do a group of 50’s tunes.

Becker Spencer added his great style and  Matt Baltzer sang some crowd pleasing songs.

The show began at 1 p.m., and ended around 5 p.m. with a gospel song sung by Frank in honour of two ladies who worked with his organization recently and are unfortunately no longer with us.

I know I have left many names out, and probably spelled some of the names wrong. For example I remember Harold being mentioned as being the sound engineer. Having being involved in the music business in past years I realize how many people and how much work it takes to put a show on like this. The canteen, the equipment set up, the layout and so on. I hope everyone else does too.

Point is, this is the second Frank Spinney “Country Generations” entertainment production I have attended, and if you get the chance you should attend one too. You certainly won’t be disappointed if you are a country fan.
