Dandillions – Bring On The Yellow
As I gaze out the window looking over my lawn, it reminds me of – everyone else’s lawn.
We are not allowed to spray anymore where I live, and can no longer use any chemical product such as weed and feed, in the interest of protecting health, environment and … bugs.
You can agree with the yay’s or nay’s depending on who you believe or what stand your being demands you take.
Point is, everything is turning yellow. Although I said I wouldn’t, last year I used one of those nice little dandelion removers that you poke in the ground and remove them one by one roots and all. It took days. The final result was success, not a dandelion in sight – until this year.
This year there are twice as many as before, often three or four of them in the same hole. As I look up and down the street there is a sea of yellow. As I look at lawns a hundred miles from here, I see a sea of yellow.
My farm up bringing allows me to know that unless everyone digs every one of their dandelions up, including the full root system, they will always return – in larger numbers. That also means all so called ‘green belt’ areas, walkways and medians must be clean also.
When they turn into little white puff-balls that travel for miles, every point from A to B has a new crop of seedlings ready to spring into action.
Those magic city suggestions of friendly products to use instead of harsh chemicals do not work.
I have decided that I do not care what anyone says, or what anyone does, I am going to be proud of my sea of yellow. Instead of a luscious green lawn, I want my sea of yellow.
I shall be proud and I will call them Dandillions!
(I wonder how long it will take dictionary.com to add that word.)
