Happy Trails

Wink: New Country Tune; 'If the Phone Don't Ring, It's Me Not Calling You'

Here we go again, suggestions that we need more walking and biking trails in our community, at a cost of millions of dollars.

I agree there are a lot of people out walking and biking these days and there could be more if it were safe.

Safe?

Most people are afraid to go anywhere alone or even as two or more because of the risks in our communities. Take some of those millions and fix some problems first. The cost of building these trails, plus the lighting and the continuing maintenance will hardly be worth it if no one feels safe enough to use them.

Think about it. It is not even safe to go through a forty foot tunnel in my area. In some areas it is pockets of hangouts along the trails. In others it is considered pure stupidity and certain personal destruction if you travel the path ways, especially after dark. I know some people who hesitate to walk their dog, and they have big dogs.

And all of this in high density city and urban areas. Imagine if the trails were extended to areas with nothing in the nearby vicinity but trees and no one around for several kilometres.

Security cameras, late night shuttles, more patrols, and extended trails all sound nice if you are trying to impress someone who isn't looking at the real depth of the scenario.

The only Happy Trails I can see are those sung by Roy Rogers, and that was back a few generations just after the wild west era. Are we going backwards?
