Another Interesting "Weak"

Police Accident
A police vehicle was involved in an accident this week proceeding through a red traffic light with its roof lights and sirens on. Three vehicles were demolished and according to one side there were no injuries, yet the television media showed a lady sitting on the curb with her head all bandaged up, and showed another gentleman being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher.

It was also stated the situation was being investigated to determine the circumstances as to whose fault it was.

I taught large vehicle drivers for a good portion of my life, and even drove emergency vehicles in my past.

In all circumstances the act says an emergency vehicle with lights and siren on "is requesting the right of way". It does not automatically have the right of way, and the sole responsibility is on the driver of the emergency vehicle proceeding through the red light to do so safely.

So what's the investigation for?

Politicians Must Lease Hybrid Cars
This one is so red it makes me turn yellow and barf. After a popular accident with a leased car, it brought to light the cost involved and the fact all were either driving expensive leased vehicles or gas guzzling 4 x 4 leased vehicles.

In the hopes of smoothing things over a public statement was made that politicians have to set the example and lease 'green' hybrid cars. Oh they cost thousands more, but the saving will be over their lease-life with the savings obtained by using less fuel.

I'd like to see the calculations for this one. When I purchased my last vehicle I looked at hybrids. It would have taken 35 years to save the extra purchase cost, and maintenance cost over my expected use of 10 - 12 years. Don't forget the maintenance cost, they are different from ordinary cars.

Now I would like to see how they do that over an average lease period with a fleet of vehicles larger than the livestock on some farms.

Want to set the example? Limit them all to 'smart cars', then I would believe it.

Lottery Sales Outlets
I have often been accused of always looking at things in a negative manner, so here is another one to boost my rating.

I hate places that sell lottery tickets among regular items. Courtesy counters, cashiers at drug stores, variety stores and farmer's markets.

Over the past two weeks I have stood at a counter/cashier space for longer than 5 minutes and the conversation with the customer ahead of me always goes like this almost word for word.

"Can you check this for me? Thanks. No, not a winner, how about this one? No? Here, this one is a bit old, but it may be good. Here try this one. Really? Five bucks! That's better than nothing. Okay I will take one of those scratch things. No not that one, yeah that one. And one of those. No maybe I would be luckier with one of those. Oh heck you may as well give me one of those too. Those are new right? Give me one of those too, no give me two. Now I guess I owe you some money. Thanks! What the heck, this may be my lucky streak, give me a 649 with the Atlantic Tag. Yeah the tag and the Atlantic. Thanks! Oh let me splurge, I would be cheating myself if I didn't get the Super 7 too. Yeah with a tag. Thanks have a nice day."

Why can't I just buy my nerve pills and walk away. I don't need to watch someone check two dozen tickets and buy more to check the next time. Lottery tickets should only be sold at lottery booths.

Canon
This time I have to be positive. Hats off to the Canon company for good service. I have several of their products and have been quite satisfied. I have a four year old digital video camera that failed suddenly. With warranty long gone, I figured I was out about seven hundred bucks. But a quick email to the company advised me to take the camcorder to the nearest service facility for free ccd sensor replacement. Apparently a bad batch of sensors were received from their supplier. In less than an hour I had the response. There will likely be more Canon products in my future.

One More Thing
A Maritime teacher was suspended for making a student stand during the national anthem. Standing during the national anthem was always a courtesy towards your country and what it stands for, along with removing head dress, unless you are military, then a salute is in order. I didn't think it was necessary to have rules that covered basic tradition passed on for generations. Then again this is diverse modern Canada where any tradition should be changed to suit someone else.

My faith in our medical system continues to 'escalate downwards' as appointments get adjusted further and further away.

My week of fascination. How was yours?
