Cell Phone Ban

cphone On April 1, 2008, Nova Scotia will join other areas where it is illegal to talk on a handheld cell phone while driving. Perhaps it is a little ironic that the ban takes effect on April Fool's Day. There has been lots of crying from those who like to use their phones while driving, about how there are other dangers just as bad, such as talking to a passenger, adjusting the stereo or arguing with the kids.

As a former driver trainer for large vehicles I have spent a lot of time on city streets and roads with student drivers. I can tell you that cell phones are dangerous and people using them never realize it. They often don't have a clue that they have put themselves and their families in life or death situations. If you don't think cell phones are dangerous, just take a drive with someone while they are using one. Just take note of how many mistakes they make and how many situations they fail to observe. Your note page will be filled in less than five minutes. There are other dangers and distractions to be sure, but lets eliminate this one.

The problem still exists because the legislation says 'hand held'. Even using a bluetooth headset or the wired kind, you mind is not on driving while you are gabbing on the phone. But at least you should have two hands available for the wheel. If you don't agree that the wireless kind is also dangerous, do the notebook suggestion above with a friend, you'll see.

Yes I do have a cell phone, wouldn't be without it. But I would not use it while driving. It would have to be some kind of an extreme emergency before I would even use it with the the hands free headset.
