Do You Want The Extended Warranty With That?
There seems to be a new trend on the go lately amongst the big box electronics retailers. It has always been there, but the push seems to be bigger these days.
You check the sales and find that item you have been waiting for at twenty or thirty bucks off. Off you go to get your electronic goodie at the store you have been in so many times.
Just about the time the sale is almost final you get the big question. "Do you want the extended warranty with that?" "How much?" you ask. "Thirty bucks for two years," is the answer. "Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of buying it on sale? That brings it back to its regular price. It's guaranteed for a year anyway by the manufacturer," I suggest. "Yeah but you have to send it back to the manufacturer and go through all that hassle, with the extended it is over the counter exchange, no questions," is the answer again.
Well that is just one of many ways they try to get you to buy the extended warranty on small or large products. That is where the money is made, often by the sales person, and by the company.
Check your receipt or the store policy. The majority of them say you have thirty days to obtain a refund if the product is not satisfactory. If it lasts thirty days there is a good chance it will last a year, if it lasts year, it will likely last a lot of years.
So I will stick with what the receipt says, and if that doesn't do it, I will gamble on the one year manufacturer's warranty. It doesn't take long to ship things by courier these days and that is most certainly cheaper than the extended offer.
