Only Twelve Tex
This has been an interesting week. First some under twelve year olds burn a camper van, but they can't be charged because they are too young, so are released into the custody of their parents. (At such a young age they have no idea what they are doing, yeah right!) Interviews on TV with neighbours say these kids are always up to no good, some have a record, and their parents never care what they are doing. Custody of their parents seems to be the right thing to do here.
More twelve year olds, this time they steal stuff from a store in a mall and when a security guard apprehends one of them, he is threatened with a knife. They too are known not to be the best little guys in the community.
Moving to an older group where there was a battle in a local high school. Seems a fight developed between two individuals and the word was spread by text messaging, which brought numerous others to the battle front. It was mentioned it may have been motivated by racial arguments that have been a long problem at that particular school.
But the big concern seems to be whether students should be allowed cell phones and text messaging at school. That makes better news for the media to play with. It makes me cringe when I hear adult supervisors say they are supposed to be turned off during class and they are only allowed to use them in the cafeteria and foyer of the school. Then twenty seconds later a student being interviewed says they use them all the time. "Sometimes it gets boring in class." Maybe that would explain why our students never live up to standards when compared to other areas.
But the phones are required in this day and age for emergencies, look at what has happened at some universities. Seems to me universities are spread over multiple acres of ground in numerous separated buildings. A little different scenario where a high school is normally all in one building.
I am also wondering if this all starts out with the under twelve situation above, and the lack of caring or concern continues on into the high school years. As the saying goes, some day many of these people will be running the country. It doesn't stop there, I won't mention the situation months ago where some elected members of our society were caught surfing the internet on their laptops during important decision making time. Oh, I did mention it. Well I will save it for another time.
Just where are we headed?
