Obituaries Rule
Another unexplained mystery I can't figure out is this: Why do people always read the obituaries in the local news after they get older?
It is not very often you see a younger or middle aged person reading those unless they have been advised of someone's passing and wish to read some details.
But once people reach a certain age, they read them every day as part of their routine. What are they looking for their own name? That's happened before and generates a quick pulse check. Are they looking for friends they used to know that are near the same age and could be mentioned anytime? If they are, they are probably in another part of the country and wouldn't be listed in the local paper anyway.
Many people I know and many of my relatives read the obituaries daily. Several of them began reading those columns a few years before their own name did appear there. Is that a sign?
I hope not. For not long ago I began reading the obituaries every day. I am so bad at remembering names I doubt I would recognize anyone I used to know anyway. I suppose I would recognize my own. Clip, laminate, store it with the rest.
