Favourite Programs
I was asked why I don't have a page on my web site of my favourite programs. Nearly all the programs mentioned on my site are or were my favourite programs.
However, here is a short list of programs that I use daily and can't do without. The first is freeCommander. I have been using this one for a long time through its various revisions. It is more than a windows explorer replacement, it does so many daily tasks so easy. With freeCommander's double pane view you can't beat it for copying, moving, or renaming files. It zips and unzips files in a blink. Make new folders, look at thumbnails or details of any files. The list goes on and on for this one and I use it many times a day.
Being a keyboard person all of these programs work super good when you use the keyboard shortcuts. For starting programs it is hard to beat FARR (Find And Run Robot). It is fast and you can set it to look at any folder you like that has programs installed in it. Bring up FARR and type a few letters of its name and the program appears almost instantly. Not only that, it keeps a drop down list of the programs used most often and if it appears on the list just select the number with the number keypad and the program starts almost instantly.
AZZ Cardfile is a replacement for the old windows cardfile program from the early windows days. Only this one is much better. You can use it for note taking, storing names, addresses, just about anything you can think of. It's fast and very convenient, handling a lot of every day tasks all in one program. It allows you to click on web addresses or email addresses right from the program, and you can even store graphics if you wish. It has a slick search box for finding all those notes and information that you need in a hurry.
Who doesn't have a bunch of passwords that you try to keep track of? Some are very important and some are just entrance words to various sites of interest. KeePass handles everything you need as far as passwords go. You only need to remember one password to access KeePass, and it takes care of the rest for you. Everything is encrypted so there is no danger if it falls into the wrong hands. You can store your passwords in usable groups and activate them with a couple key strokes when opening a protected site or program.
That's four of my favourite programs that I use every day without fail. I have reviewed many of them on my web site if you want more details. Perhaps I will list more another time. These four programs are free, that's right, free. A lot of work goes into making them and keeping them updated, so a donation is more than warranted if you can.
