RRR - Rough Ride Retailers

The people that predict that sort of thing are saying this year's holiday season will be a rough one for many retailers because of our uncertain economy. Maybe so, and in some cases I hope so, for some deserve what they will get.

The trend I am noticing is sales that are advertised through flyers or other means, where the product is not available, even on the first day of the sale. "We had forty and they are all sold out. Sold twenty this morning." "We have been selling them like wildfire. More are on order, but we can't say when they will be in." Just a sample of comments I have heard when I go merrily to the store to get an item that is advertised on sale.

And in many cases the item suddenly appears in stock a few days after the sale is over. It was rare a couple years ago that a sale item wouldn't be in stock for the sale, and if they sold out they would offer a rain check so you could obtain the item for the sale price when it did come in. Not anymore. "Sorry sir, no rain checks at that price."

These are big name stores I am talking about, not little guys with little cash flow. I would guess that more than half of the items in sales flyers that are really sales are not in stock. These are 'draws' to get you to the store, almost to the point of false advertising, in hopes you will buy something else from them instead. I don't. I would go some place else.

So I hope it is a Rough Ride Retailers if you use tactics like this you deserve what you get.
