Click Happy

One more note on things users do wrong when downloading and installing programs or updates.

They tend to click 'next', 'ok' or 'continue' without looking at what they are clicking. In fact I have been hooked to another users computer by remote more than once talking them through a procedure when they will click four or five buttons before I can stop them.

So for goodness sake, read what is in the box before you click. And if you really want to be safe and in control, always choose 'custom' install. Never 'typical' or whatever is easiest. Do custom install and you will know exactly what the install program is doing - if you read the boxes before you click.

These boxes and custom installs often give you some options as to whether you want some geeky toolbar installed, or some auxiliary program that is in the ad category. Others provide some additional optional instructions such as graphics settings that may make what you are installing that much better.

Too many times I have found  users get into trouble because they just 'click click clicked' rapidly through the sequence without paying any attention to what was going to happen.

In some cases the originator is hoping you will do just that, take the easier route, so they can add what they want instead of what you need. In other cases they are trying to make it easier for you to decide, but you just didn't pay attention.

So when doing anything, but especially when you are downloading and installing stuff, click carefully, and read the boxes to see just what you are asking to be done.
