Where Did It Go? I Can't Find It

I help people often with their computer problems, by walking them through procedures or at times connecting to their computer remotely to allow them to see how things are done and then experience it themselves by doing.

This often involves downloading updates or additional software to do the job required. Can you guess what the biggest problem is? Hearing the familiar phrase: "Where did it go? I can't find it."

Each time I will say in great detail, after you click on the download link there will be a box come up that says 'save' or 'save as', do not click on 'run'. Either before or just after you click one of the save options it will say where the file is going, or give you the option of selecting a folder yourself. Pay attention to where the file is going, write it down if you have to, for you will need it. That is why you are downloading it.

Once the file is done downloading it is time to go to that file, and here is what I hear dozens of times: "Where did it go? I can't find it." So time is wasted searching for an often non-existent file and then the file has to be downloaded again.

All computers are set differently according to what you have done in the past, or what defaults have been set. Some download files to Downloads, Received Files, or the Desktop. But you need to know where before you actually start downloading the file.

This sounds so simple, and should be almost automatic. Yet time and time again I hear "Where did it go? I can't find it."
