Email Is Fast – Maybe Not

A lot of us depend on email for nearly all of our communications with each other because it is easy to do, you can send attachments, and it is fast, right? Well maybe not, it depends on the person doesn’t it.

Instant Response - There’s some people you send email to that answer back so fast you don’t get your hand off the mouse after hitting the send button. Are they sitting by their computer just waiting for the next email? Who knows, but they are fast.

At Least They Answer - There’s the next group that probably check their email once or twice a day. You never know what time they will check it. It may be in the morning, could be in the afternoon, perhaps mid-evening. They might even forget a day now and then. They will answer eventually. The spin off is I bet you check your email multiple times a day to see if they answered or not.

Was My Email Ever Received - The last category is the folks who check their email – eventually. It might be today, maybe tomorrow, perhaps next week or possibly sometime this month. That’s understandable if all you get is junk mail and spam. But for the person who is waiting for an answer to that all important question it is frustrating and not good at all.

No Rule - When someone knocks on your door, there is no rule that I know of that says you must answer it. Likewise there is no rule that I am aware of that says you have to check your email.

It sure defeats the purpose of email communications if the person doesn’t answer it within a reasonable amount of time, assuming it does require an answer.

Maybe that is why they invented text messaging and instant messenger type chat programs. That’s another story.

The next time you get an email, think about it. Is the person that sent it waiting for a response?
