What Is That?
When assisting people with their computers I often ask that question. Often it's an inquiry about an inch or more of tool bars across the top of their screen.
I Don't Know
The answer I usually get: "I don't know, I never use that. I have no idea where that came from."
One of the common causes of a s-l-o-w computer.
Where They Came From
Here's some possibilities where they came from:
- You clicked on an attachment someone sent you in an email.
- You installed a program and didn't do a custom install.
- You clicked on one of those neat things in Facebook that your friends liked.
- You clicked on one of those "you should scan now" things on a web page. It looked authentic.
You Did It
Point is, it didn't suddenly appear from out of nowhere. One way or another you unknowingly did it.
You should check often for things that suddenly appear that weren't there before.
Most of these things have stuff running in the background that eventually will slow your computer to a crawl.
Removal
Some are easy to remove, others will require the help of an experienced user.
First try add/remove programs to see if the offending item is listed there. If it is, just uninstall it.
Otherwise you may wish to call your favourite computer geek.
Do It Now
One important note: If you made a mistake, get rid of the item right away, whether it be a tool bar or something else.
Don't wait until you have half a screen full of unwanted items.
Another pay attention to what you are clicking advisory.
