Big Fat Compact Bulbs?

Lots of people are purchasing compact florescent bulbs to replace the old style filament incandescent ones. The new florescents use a very small amount of power compared to the old style, and a few pennies here and there often add up to a worthwhile amount on your electrical bill.

These compact florescent bulbs are beginning to show up in various local retailer’s weekly sales. The first ones looked like little spiral affairs or loop type white tubes that fit ordinary sockets. Now they are available as floodlights. They are also available in the small base format to fit chandelier type fixtures.

The prices seem right for such a saving over the years as the bulbs promise to last for a long time, four to seven years.

The small ones work fine. For others there is a catch. I purchased some floodlight models. I intended they would replace some outdoor floods in some of the sensor light fixtures I have. They will not fit any type of outdoor socket. The shoulder of the bulb just above the socket thread is too large and they will not screw into the sockets properly to make contact. This area is probably large because of the florescent components inside. However these name brand bulbs are useless and have to go back.

I almost bought some of the chandelier small base ones. Thankfully I didn’t. On closer inspection of our fixture I find that the length and thickness of these compact florescent models would not fit either as the bulb envelope would strike support parts of the fixture and be next to impossible to install.

Maybe this is a trick to get us to buy some new type of floodlight socket or dining room fixture. In any case, check the space requirements closely or you will be making a trip back – not saving electricity, but wasting fuel. I may post some pictures and information on the web site soon for visual proof…
