Here we go again.
News article a couple days ago suggests that Canada may buy second hand tanks from Germany and other countries. We can get them for a good price.
Didn't we learn anything from the subs? Why would someone be getting rid of used subs? Why would someone be getting rid of used tanks? There must be a reason, and if they have been sitting idle - well you know what that means.
The reason given is that the sellers don't need as many anymore since the world threat has changed in the last few years. Sound like a used car salesman, "Driven by an older person who never left town?".
I have been involved with large vehicles practically all my life. When they sit things happen. They have liquid lubricated bearings. When they sit the oil stays at the bottom due to gravity. Transmissions and gear cases are the same. The oil stays at the bottom and the top bearings and gears are dry.
When they are used again, the portion that was dry wears out quickly insuring early failure. For that reason, any heavy equipment that was sitting had to be driven weekly. That is one reason you see snow plows on the move during summer months.
That is only one small example. Our service people deserve the very best equipment we can get if they are going to be placed in daily danger - not something from the used widget salesman.
