Headlines - Crosswalk - Halifax
Woman injured by car in crosswalk
One of the headlines in todays paper. What the h$%% was the car doing using the crosswalk anyway? Are they not supposed to be using the other part of the street?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name game
The other headline that has been making news the last couple of days is one that applies locally to Halifax Regional Municipality or HRM.
During amalgamation around eleven years ago, that rather long name was chosen to describe us. Yet every area that was included to this day keeps their original name. It is well known that Halifax city, wants and gets everything compared to the other members of the group. That is another argument by itself.
Now we are going to waste sessions and taxpayers money by debating this issue over. The argument seems to be that if you go somewhere, and certain members go somewhere often, the name Halifax Regional Municipality is too long and no one knows where it is. Huh? The first word in the name is H-a-l-i-f-a-x. Doesn't that say Halifax just as much as if it were by itself? I fail to see a problem here.
I do see a problem for all of us as taxpayers should the name change take place. I would love to have all the dollars spent changing the signs a few years back from Halifax to Halifax Regional Municipality. There are a lot more to change now, since Welcome to Halifax Regional Municipality signs have been spread all across the country side from city core to outlying areas.
Just imagine the cost of changing letterheads and envelopes again, city vehicles, buses, uniforms and advertising to name only a few. Then there may be a cost to some businesses who also changed their address. That cost would be passed to consumers.
All because some locals can't pick Halifax out of Halifax Regional Municipality. People from away don't seem to have that problem that I am aware of.
