Remote Controlled Computers - Remote Desktop
Awhile ago I mentioned connecting to other people's computers via the internet using remote assistance in order to show and assist them with doing things new to them on their computers.
This got me thinking about my own networked computers. (Never mind the wood burning jokes.) I often work on a laptop on the kitchen table. My server and other computer is located downstairs in another location.
Quite often I needed a file off the server or needed to update a web page from the main computer. That meant going downstairs, turning them on, and waiting for the long boot times so familiar to windows users. Once they are on it is no problem exchanging files from one to the other.
Then late in the evening when it is time to retire for the night one suddenly remembers, "oh the computer is still on downstairs," and you have to go down to turn it off. Now some folks prefer to leave their computers on all the time, and sometimes I have done that, but usually I prefer to turn them off when not using them overnight.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to turn those computers on and off by using the laptop upstairs?
Well you can, by using Remote Desktop Connection, which is already included with Windows XP Pro, and Vista Home Premium. You can control any of your computers no matter which one you are sitting in front of, just like you are sitting at the keyboard of the other one.
It is not all that difficult to do. There are plenty of instructions on the internet that gives the steps to accomplish this. However, I found that I had to visit over a half dozen sites to figure out exactly what they were saying. So my next venture on my web site will be to try and put those instructions together with a few pictures in simplified form in case you have more than one computer and want to be able to control the other from either one.
It will take some time to get it written and some pictures ready, but I should have that available within a week.
