Call Centre Stops Calling

Halifax call centre to lay off 485, reads one of the headlines in today's paper. I am not surprised are you?

That seems to be the routine, move in, get the grants, subsidies, and payroll rebates, then move on to the next taker. The politicians can stand back smiling on TV with their chests stuck out, bragging about how many jobs they created.

The numbers are never advertised of how may jobs disappear, just how many are created, or 'might' be created.

Every time I see one of these announcements about a call centre popping up with the opportunity of hundreds of jobs, I always think the same. Whose warehouse or vacant office space are they going to take over now? How much will it cost us to set them up, for we are the ones who pay for that too.

upgradesystem A call centre is nothing more than a bunch of partitions (if the workers are lucky), and a pile of basic computer terminals, and a telephone patch panel. It can be installed or taken away in a few hours. And when the Canadian dollar rises to match or beat our southern neighbours, you know it will be time to move on.

Who knows, maybe they will  come back some day under a new name and we can boost those figures once again with a few incentives our of our pockets.
