Housework Update

Needle_Thread Just about time I updated you on some of my housework projects once again. For most men today all of these things are easy. However my wife used to wait on me hand and foot. Now there are a lot of things I have to learn on my own as the need arises.

So yesterday's project was buttons. Yes buttons. I had three shirts that were missing some buttons, one was missing a button off the cuff and the other two were missing buttons off the front. Should be easy to fix right?

Chasing down a needle and thread was easy, the most likely spot being the sewing basket. Except the sewing basket that my wife had, was not a basket but was a series of flip open boxes made like a little stand. I didn't know there were so many sewing gadgets that would fit in one place.

It was awful tempting to sew on those new buttons with bright neon thread. Turns out the most difficulty was selecting the proper color of white. There were at least six spools with different shades of white.

Now the first part of the trick, was to get that tiny little thread through the tiny little hole in the needle. That's were you find out how shaky you are, and that needle hole should be about 1 inch wide for me to hit it accurately. Moving to bright sunlight, this was accomplished after half a dozen tries.

So now it's time to sew on the button. A few pokes to get a base for the button started, pop the button over the needle, and go back and forth with the thread through those tiny little holes. Those tiny little holes are hard to hit accurately from the underside.

Ending up with a punctured thumb and a punctured finger, it looks like the job is almost finished after a tiny knot.

I hadn't touched needle and thread since about 50 years ago when the armed forces gave me that funny little kit. So I proudly hold up my shirt with its brand-new button fully attached.

Anybody know how to get blood spots off a light-colored shirt?
