  As I read the news of late, three saying always come to mind, "Times Change" and "Life Goes On". How true they are in so many ways.

At one time if a major snow storm arrived, school closed early and the kids were sent home. These days they don't even wait for the storm to arrive. If a snow flake falls a thousand miles away and the storm is headed in our direction, school is closed for the day. Then the next news item will indicate our kids are not good at math. Well no wonder when all they have to figure is that they have the day off.

Talk about parents setting the example, do they ever! When school is closed for the day they moan and groan about having to stay home from work to look after their kids. If you want to raise a family and have kids, be prepared to look after them - yourself. Don't cry and whine that tax funded day cares won't look after them.

Across the board is the other debates that go on and on. Yes in our city of Halifax they spent session after session generating a cat bylaw. A cat bylaw! Finally it was finished! Or so we thought. Now they are going to argue about it again as to whether the public should decide via a plebiscite. Something about cost to operate such a bylaw. What about the cost for members to discuss this every few weeks. Aren't there some more important things to be decided when you have a city to run.

It goes all the way to the national level. First a heated discussion whether money was exchanged for certain favours in years gone by. Now more headlines about whether life insurance policies were handed out as a bonus for certain favours. Where are we headed? Isn't there more important things to decide and spend time on when running a country.

All I can say is we sure are setting an example for our kids - who will be running the show themselves some day. An example of how to get media attention and accomplish nothing.

Oh, the third saying: "Mother told me there would be days like this. She just didn't say how many"
