Metric - Metres Doesn't Make Any Sense With Airplanes
A day or so ago I was reading an article about an aircraft incident, and this brought to mind how stupid we really are trying to be politically correct. I spent half my working life around airplanes, and I double checked to make sure my feelings are reasonably correct.
This article proceeded to describe an incident that took place while an aircraft was flying at xx,xxx metres (or meters if you spell it the American way). It went on to say said airplane was traveling 250 mph. What does that tell us? Not much.
There are a few things that are standardized around the world in the flight scene. First, English is the standard language for aircraft operations between air traffic control and the aircraft. Height is determined in feet, not metres. And speed is in nautical miles per hour or knots.
There is a reason for all this which has to do with degrees of the earth and long distances, which will not be explained here. Google can take care of that for you.
Point is, this article was more interested in being politically correct rather than presenting an informative news article about an aircraft incident.
