Where Are The Batteries?
How many things do you have around your house that are no longer usable because they need batteries?
For example, I have several UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplys), and a couple emergency lighting units kicking around that are no longer usable because they need batteries.
Where do you get the batteries is the question. They are not available where the units were initially purchased. They can order them for you but they cost more than the price of the original unit. In fact, you can buy the batteries at specialty electrical stores at more than the cost of the original unit.
I can order the batteries online at a fairly reasonable price. But after you figure in the cost of shipping, again the price is higher than what was paid for the unit in the first place. So what do we do? Usually go out and buy another like item because it is cheaper. (Think printers and the cost of replacement cartridges.)
Seems to me in this age of conservation there should be a way to get these rather heavy batteries for a reasonable cost so the items could continue being used until the end of their technical life which is usually many years. Instead of that they go to the landfill in most cases, recycled in a few cases - either way you look at it because of cost it is a needless waste.
