Mark Your Bricks
If you are like me, you have dozens of these 'power bricks' all over the house. Nearly every electrical device has one these days, especially the smaller electronics, but so does things like scanners, monitors and their size varies from big to bigger.
With the drive on for us to conserve energy, we are being encouraged to unplug these little monsters when they are not actually being used. Yes they do consume electricity when they are plugged in and their device is not connected.
This may seem like common sense, but an issue arrives when you unplug a bunch of these and they end up in a pile together. Whether they are on the corner of your desk, in a box or just lying on the floor, if there are more than one, what the heck is it for? Is this one for the video camera? Is that one for the cell phone? Where's the one for the laptop?
So the day you get the power brick and its gadget, label it with the name of the item it is for. You will be glad you did. Select the wrong one and you end up with fried electronics and it doesn't fit in with many meal menus.
You write on them with a marker, but it doesn't show up well on black plastic. You could use a tape writer, but that is expensive, and it is never handy when you want it. Best way I have found is to have a bunch of plastic tags on hand like in this picture. You can get a bunch of them for a low cost from any stationary type store. Just write the name of the device on the tag with a marker, and loop it around and attach it directly to the cord. They last almost forever and don't interfere with anything.
Bonus, these tags are great for identifying connecting cables, router lines, and many things. They are available in various colours or a multi-colour pack so are handy for colour coding these same connections.
