One Misplaced Letter
People have told me that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn for various reasons. I thought just for today we would look at what a difference just one letter could make.
For example, if you had a friend named Fern ( which I did), and you decided to write him a letter, it would probably start out, Dear Fern: But if you just mistype one letter it could come out Dead Fern:
It could get worse. If a lady said she liked to get her man excited as part of her evening entertainment, imagine how the perception would change if one letter were changed and she said she liked to get her men excited.
You could ask how is John doing? You could reply that he is better now. Change one letter and the reply would be that he is bitter now!
Or if you say “she is out there waiting for her honey every day,” would take on a brand new meaning if you changed one letter and said “she is out there waiting for her money every day.”
So if someone says you need to look after this better, they might have meant to say you need to look after this letter.
You may not be in trouble after all, and spell checkers won’t help us with one misplaced letter – long live proof readers.
