It Won't Shutdown
Many times I get calls saying "My computer won't shut down, I can't turn it off." Quite often it involves a notebook computer. You would think the following information would be standard knowledge, but it isn't always for everyone.
If your computer won't turn off or shut down, try the following:
* Ctrl+Shift+Esc - Press all three at once, which should bring up Task Manager and allow you to select Shutdown, Logoff or Disconnect.
* Ctrl+Alt+Delete - Press all three at once, which results in the same as the above step. In some cases pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete a second time will shut down the computer.
* If you computer has a Reset button, try that. Most newer computers do not have that anymore.
* Finally, Press the Power Switch, and hold it in for a few seconds until it shuts down. Most computers now days will just go into Standby or do nothing if you just press the Power Switch once. This depends on the power settings in your configuration. If you hold the power switch in and watch the various LEDs you should see it power down.
You should always shut you computer off by using the proper method. These are last resort methods when things don't work like they normally should.
The normal method for mouse users would be to click Start and select Shutdown or Reboot.
For keyboard users, Alt+F4 when there are no programs open on the desktop, using the arrow keys to select Shutdown or Reboot and pressing Enter.
