Shut up! ... Please!

One of the world's top news channels is great for covering happening events almost instantly. I would guess that everyone has tuned in to that channel at least once for "breaking news."

But their announcers need some training. They are usually great at interviewing, and reporting. But they need training - badly - on how to shut up.

Today the audio of the conversations regarding the aircraft that splashed down successfully in the Hudson River was released to the public. It doesn't take much knowledge to figure out that aircraft conversations don't go on continuously non-stop. They have no dead airtime rule, their conversation takes place in spurts as required to get an airplane safely to its destination or in this case to it's emergency landing.

I tried in vain to listen to that conversation the minute it was released on the news channel of the world. But I couldn't hear a damn thing!

Every time the aircraft captain or controller said something, the female announcer spoke over the top of it with some dumb comment. Then she would pause as the producer or someone fiddled with the audio level. Thinking there was nothing more happening, she would speak again just as the conversation on the radio began again.

I am familiar with broadcast procedures. It wouldn't be too hard for someone to provide instructions. I notice this is becoming a habit for this once 'super' super station. The on air personalities are talking over the top of everyone most of the time. They ask a question of someone, and during the answer they talk over the top of them about something else.

At least there are other networks, even if we do have to wait for the evening news presentation. Or better yet, read it on the internet.
