Port George 27th Country Jamboree
Although I had attended quite a few of these in the past, it has been several years since I had been there, so this year I decided to attend the Port George Jamboree, 27th edition on Saturday, July 25, 2009. Port George is located just north of Middleton, in the Annapolis Valley, on the Bay of Fundy shore.
You can see from the Port George Jamboree web site that it is quite a gathering of country music folk. Not only is there a continuous stage show, but a flea market with various wares and lots of food for all. Food at prices of years gone by. I had a hamburger and later, fish and chips, and the portions were a size you don’t see much anymore.
This year the weather wasn’t too cooperative at first. Being directly on the Bay of Fundy shore, the wind was strong and it was cold. Things got better around noon when the sun decided to stay and the temperature began to rise a few degrees.
Compared to past jamboree’s at Port George I found the sound quality a little less than previously, with some feed back squeals now and then. The sound was probably hindered some by the fact speakers were covered to protect them from the rain which was very close at times.
I also found some disorganization when changing groups, it seemed to take longer than expected. At times we got to listen to recordings, or parts of them, and then the various instrument picking, and clicking, with that famous “Test, test, test…” thrown in.
Once under way, each group did a fine job of entertaining the people on a less than ideal day weather wise. There certainly was a wide variety of groups to entertain a wide variety of people attending.
The object of Port George Jamboree is to have a fun filled day for everyone from children to senior adults. The organizers, volunteers and sponsors certainly accomplished that. I look forward to attending the 28th.
