Skype – Brings Wedding Ceremony by Remote
I have often mentioned the virtues of Skype and how much I like it. In fact as a paid subscriber I use Skype for almost all my telephone calls both near and far. Long distance is tenths of a cent. You may have also noticed that even TV stations use it a lot for video feeds from remote locations.
Skype video is HD and unlike most other message/chat type programs you can run full screen video with the quality being way above average.
Nova Scotia to South Korea
Yesterday with a friend, we put Skype to another use unheard of by most standards. We watched a wedding ceremony from South Korea, live, in colour with full audio and very little lag. The distance from Nova Scotia to South Korea is substantial and it truly was the next best thing to being there. The wedding ceremony there is more elaborate there than here, and lasted a little over two hours.
We were able to watch the full proceedings with no drop outs or any technical difficulties. And to top it off, only a web cam and laptop computer were used on the other end. Sure, some of the shots were a little far away and the pan process was a little jumpy, but compared to a mother not being able to see her son’s ceremony at all, it was like a dream come true.
Live Video Goes Both Ways
One more bonus, since Skype is a two way communications program, the picture from this end was sent to South Korea and the people there were able to see Mom’s picture on the laptop screen. Even though thousands of miles away, participation was still possible.
Only the time difference became a factor, when you realize it is 4pm on Saturday there, and 1am on Friday here, with completion some time after 3am.
Recorded Memories
With the aid of Camtasia we were able to record the entire ceremony, edit and save it to DVD.
So I am even more of a Skype fan now and will continue to be as I keep finding more and more features and uses with it.
There are more possibilities.
After being technical assistant for this venture I began to realize more Skype possibilities. With a laptop with a firewire input and a digital camcorder you are in position for better video yet. This would mean much higher quality, panning from a proper tripod, and having extreme zoom capability.
The next venture of this sort will include that addition if necessary.
