DIY – Do It Yourself Don’t Bother Me
I went into one of the big name banks the other day to change a number on one of the cards I have and make an adjustment to another. I also had a small cheque to cash. There was very little activity in the bank, in fact for a long time I was the only one there.
The teller quickly cashed the cheque and then said, “You can change that card number at the ATM machine you know.” “Can’t I do it here?” I asked. “You can, but I have to fill out paper work. At the machine there is no paper work.” she replied. “Is that a problem?” I inquired. “No, I can do it. It is just easier at the ATM machine.” she said. “I prefer to do it here,” was my response.
The card adjustment I needed was completed first, which also involved a signature and a paragraph of print. The process took about three minutes which could have been accomplished in one.
“Do you want me to show you how to do the other card number at the machine?” she asked. “Can’t it be done here?” I again replied. “Yes, but it is easier at the machine,” she insisted. “I would rather do it here,” I said, “That’s why I am here.”
The entire process took about ten minutes, which could likely have been completed in under five if she had just got on with it.
Most people do wonderful at customer service when that is their job. It just makes me wonder in this day of job cut backs due to jobs being computerized and what not, why someone would keep insisting I use a machine outside the premises.
Being a technical sort of person I could have used the machine to change the number I needed. But if you make a mistake the machine often keeps your card. Due to time constraints I didn’t want to take that chance.
No wonder the bank was almost empty and I was the only customer.
