My Nova Scotia Home
It is nice being in Panama City Beach, Florida for the winter, but often the thoughts are still at home. Some folks directed us to the Beach House about a mile from here, mentioning that is where some of the Canadians hang out and do a jam session every Tuesday from three until six.
Deciding to check the place out, we found a small place, smoky and loud, but the music was oh so good. Our arrival was at the end of one set of the band’s music with two songs to go.
On their break the band members made a point of circulating through the audience to find out your names and where you were from along with some details on your winter visit south. In turn they directed you to other Canadians in the audience to share hometown areas and small talk about your Canadian life left behind.
This was a nice gesture as it made you feel part of the group, while at the same time realizing that vast parts of Canada were represented, some far away and some close to home.
Soon it was time for the six member band to return to the stage for their next set. To our surprise the first song was “My Nova Scotia Home” dedicated to us by name.
I thought it was nice of them to do that, and a surprise it was. That song was done beautifully, as were the remainder of Christmas and country tunes. They called it a jam session, but it was far from that. Each individual musician really got into it, and the results were great.
Just before leaving during a second break in their routine I asked the name of their band. “Chucky Wucky & the Snowbirds,” was the answer. “How do you spell that?” I asked. Quote: “I don’t know how he spells it, don’t worry about that,” was the reply; end Quote.
No matter how you spell it or how you say it, the experience will be one remembered. Who knows? Maybe we will drop in to the Beach House again.
