Web Shadow

I was just reading a couple chapters of a book called, “Me and My Web Shadow: How to Manage Your Reputation Online by Antony Mayfield”. The material was made available by one of my newsletters I subscribe to, Windows Secrets.

I hadn’t heard that term used in that way before, but basically it is described as the footprint or information you leave on the web after you are gone. Most of us don’t think about it, but every time we access the internet we are leaving tracks behind.

I am not going to take or repeat the author’s information from the book. It is an important subject that we all need to think about.

Social privacy is a hot topic today, with Facebook and others changing their policies as to what is passed on and what is kept private. Private? I don’t think anything is private on here anymore. Even if you just use your browser to check the weather, you have left a trail behind.

I think it is something we all need to think about more seriously and deeply than we usually do. Even when we delete something, it is probably still there somewhere, in more than one place. Some server somewhere has that information, or someone else’s computer that downloaded or looked at it.

If you get a chance, read “Me and My Web Shadow: How to Manage Your Reputation Online by Antony Mayfield”. It will certainly get you thinking, and maybe even consider things in a more serious light when it comes to using the internet and all its attractions.

What makes up your Web Shadow?
