Roam a little Pay a lot

cphoneAs I prepare for the Snowbird journey south there are lots of things to be looked after. Many are routine, some require a lot of time to organize, while other things seem ridiculous as our world seems to get smaller year by year.

I have always been a proponent of PC pay as you go cell phones. They work well, the pay as you go options are priced so you can choose what is best for your particular situation. Or they were.

It is on their website, and I was told today, you can no longer have roaming across the border in the US – due to technical problems. Hmmm… yet my phone which has had roaming for a few years can still have it because it was always on there for an extended time.  That’s a part of technical I don’t understand.

My companion, who purchased a new phone this past May cannot have US roaming because it is no longer available on prepaid phones. But in order to keep that phone activated for the four months we will be south, she has to buy prepaid cards for those months, or pay the annual fee for the year. If not, the funds currently built up will expire, and be lost.

I was informed that there is no other option. Our purpose for the two phones was to be able to have them for emergencies and to be able to keep in contact with each other as needed, all the time, everywhere. Well there is another option, it was suggested, buy a ‘throw-away’ cell phone as they are called and use those.

But that means paying for the PC phones for 4 months, that can’t be used, plus extra for throw-away phones.

I am wondering if folks who travel south for an extended time are aware of this. Doesn’t seem like proper customer service to me.
