NASCAR and Politics

What do NASCAR and politics have in common you ask? Cheaters! Around my home territory the past political year has been filled with news of certain individuals cheating on expense accounts in various ways. This from the federal to the provincial levels.

But NASCAR? I've been a NASCAR fan for a lot of years, hardly ever missing a race on TV, and when unable to watch, often tune in to the play by play on satellite radio. I have even been to Daytona a couple of times, plus visited another track or two. I have enjoyed it a lot.

Until this year.

A rash of penalties for cheating the rules a little when assembling or building the cars. More penalties for pushing the adjustments and parts tolerances to the limit, or over.

Now accounts of spins on purpose to aid a team mate. Radio conversations where it is discussed a driver should fall back to ensure another team mate's future success.

Is this the NASCAR I used to enjoy?

My interest and enjoyment is waning a little bit. How about you?

Now when I watch a race on TV I can't help wondering, is that leading car really good? Or are the rules being pushed beyond the limit again?

Is that car in the number two position really that good? Or has someone done that driver a favour? The number three car, the twelve, any of them.

I am seriously losing interest fast, just because it seems now that what goes on behind the scenes has more bearing on the outcome than the car on the track.
