CPR on a CPU
A lot of the time I use a notebook computer with Windows Vista networked to the others. Vista is the latest operating system that has received various positive and negative reviews. I read that Vista is so well designed that you don't even have to turn it off anymore. The power system has been so revamped and modernized that when you close the lid it will go into sleep mode or hibernation, depending on how you have it set. The drives shut down and it goes into a low power mode after due time saving energy.
So most times instead of turning it off, I have been just closing the lid. The blinking orange LED tells me shortly that it has gone to sleep.
So I get up in the morning and open the lid expecting it to spring to life and nothing happens. What now? Was I supposed to set the alarm? Is it sleeping in? On wow, my computer over slept!
The LEDs on the front tell me its awake. The black screen and total silence tells me its asleep. So I press a few keys. I move the mouse around. Nothing. So I press the power button. The blue LED then blinks orange telling me it has gone to sleep.
Well lets analyze this a bit. My computer went to sleep last night. Now it won't wake up. Its vital signs are two blue LEDs and a blinkin' orange one. One says the stupid thing is plugged in, and the other says the power is on, with the third saying it's sleeping. Hard to figure that one out isn't it?
So . . . how do you CPR on a CPU? I pumped the space bar already, blessed it several times, and pressed the power button so hard my finger turned as blue as the LED.
Finally after holding the power button in for a much longer than normal time, it shut off with a "zinnnng!" sound. I waited the usual recommended thirty seconds and pressed the power button again. The notebook finally springs to life and is back to normal. Oh it did advise me it recovered from a serious operating system error. Yeah the fool thing went into a deep sleep. And it asked if I wanted Safe Mode. Gettin' it out of the sleep mode was bad enough, who wants to get it out of the safe? Did I want the Command Prompt? Not now, I could have used that when the d#$% screen was blank. I command you to wake up Oh sleepy one! Did I want to start normally? Yeah that's what I wanted in the first place.
They say computers are just machines and can't do anything by themselves. Well I didn't tell it to sleep in. And when I tried to wake it there was little or no response. When it finally comes around it displays those stupid messages like it needed input because I did something wrong.
I am thinking "listen stupid, it's a good thing you woke up when you did, and rebooted like you are supposed to. If you had held off much longer it wouldn't have done you any good, because I have the winning hand. I would have pulled your plug - then you could have a good long sleep!"
