Chain My Christmas Card

(Click the Grinch)

I have made my views known before of what I think about email "chain mail". I never send it on, and no matter what the threat I break the chain. I enjoy a little humour now and then, but don't make it sound like I have to send it on or my wings will fall off.

"Please send this to all the people in your address book."

"Forward this to at least five friends."

"Including 'send it back to me' duh!"

"Something nice will happen to you within 24 hrs."

"You will see a miracle happen right away."

And here is the best one of all: "Below you will see how long this candle has been burning, I wouldn't want to be the one to put it out." Of course the date is usually 1997 or 1998.

Well if you know how to look at email headers and trace its origin you most likely will find that candle began burning in 2007.

For the past week or so I have been averaging 8 to 15 of those a day. When you consider the pictures, music and other things these emails contain, just imagine how much it clogs up the internet system if everyone sends it to everyone in their address book.

So the candle stops here, or whatever else the chain requires. Or if a really good one does happen to come along, I will remove the 'forward to your friends' part before I hit the 'Send'.

Lets see, spam filter setting: If message contains "forward to all your friends" or "forward to XX people" then "move to trash". There, that'll take care of 10% of my emails.
