Click Fast
Again I have to emphasize, don't be too fast to click on things. Helping users out with some of their computer problems by remote online, I have found one prominent problem in their actions. They click on anything that comes up way too fast, sometimes so fast I can't even read the boxes as they are doing it.
Especially when installing and using programs, read every box as it comes up to see what you are actually saying 'ok' to. Often you are giving permission to install a spyware type of addition, or some goofy tool bar that uses up resources and you will use very little.
You could also be authorizing the program to start every time you start your computer. Most times it is better for you to start the program when you want to use it rather than when the computer boots up. This is the most common cause of slow startups and shut downs.
One more thing, always do a custom install if it is offered. Always! It may take a few seconds longer because it is going to show you everything it is going to add, and gives the option of accepting or rejecting some of those 'special' goodies. Remember to read it carefully before you click anything.
This helps to have the stuff on your computer that you want, not what someone else thinks you should have.
