MailTo Shortcut
We haven’t done any computer shortcuts for a long time, so here is one you may like. Let’s put a mail to shortcut on your desktop that you can click and open up your default email compose window, and send without even opening your email program. This works particularly well if you use Thunderbird for email.
First of all, right click on your desktop and select New>shortcut.
Type “mailto:” in the location box that comes up (without the quotations). All small letters and be sure to use the colon.
Click Next.
Name the shortcut MailTo or the name you prefer.
Click Next.
You will end up with an icon on your desktop similar to this depending on your email program.
For you keyboard types, or if you want to change the icon, right click on the icon.
To change the icon, just click on ‘Change Icon’ and select the one you want.
For keyboard types, just enter a shortcut such as Shift+Ctrl+M
You will now be able to compose email by clicking the icon or using the keyboard shortcut Shift+Crtl+M
When you click the icon or use the keyboard shortcut, your normal email compose window will appear even if your email program is not running. (Shown here at reduced size.) All you need to do is enter the address, write your email and send.
If you use a keyboard program such as FARR (Find And Run Robot), you don’t even need a shortcut. Simply type mailto in the box and hit enter and your email compose window pops up instantly.
