The Bigger The Store The Smaller The Space

cap21I have noticed this in grocery stores in particular, but it can apply to any large retailer. One would expect a large store would provide more space, accommodate more people, have more product and be easier to shop in.

Wide Aisles

Bigger grocery stores usually have wider and longer aisles. Right? Much easier to get around with those wide fully loaded grocery carts, right?        -=Wrong=-!

Product Display

Since the aisles are nice and wide, lets put out more displays, right in the middle of them. Or off to the side. Or both. The aisles are long, so putting several of these displays in each aisle will really attract attention.

While we're at it lets put Jimminy Joe out there too, restocking shelves, with his  4x4x4 pallets placed end to end - sort of.

Obstacle Course

Well they are right about one thing. They do attract attention. With barely enough room to get a cart by on either side, people are usually lined up waiting to get by. These displays are placed beside popular products, so there's always someone half way through the narrow part trying to choose whether to get name brand or no name, large size, small size or economy size, or 1, 2 for 1, or none. And the line up to get by does the opposite to decrease.

"Oh auntie I haven't seen you in ages, how are you doing?" is half way through too.

Signs On The End

You must have noticed how some grocery stores put the signs of what's in the aisle on the very end of the shelf areas. Failing that, they are overhead facing a direction only flying martians could read. You have to be already in the aisle several feet before you can read the sign. Don't back up, you'll knock over Granny who's bending over to see if All Bran is really all bran.

16 Cash Registers

One positive thing about the big grocery stores is they have lots of cash registers. Of course only 3 are open, one with a customer whose credit card doesn't work, the other with a price check in progress, and the one I'm in where 20 items count as 10 if you divide by 2.

"Can you tell I am old, retired, no schedule, and love grocery shopping?"
